5 Tips for Teaching Phonological Awareness

Now that we have learned a little bit about phonological awareness, I want to share some tips with you on fitting it into your daily small group lesson!

Tip #1 — Keep it Short!

Phonological Awareness lessons should take anywhere between 3-5 minutes, that's it! Remember, you are not teaching to mastery every single day. You are exposing them to the skill each day until they do master it.

Tip # 2 — Make it Engaging

One of the best things about phonological awareness is the fact that you can make it fun. There are so many ways to engage your littles and still teach the skill. Throw in a ball, puppet, or dry erase marker.

Tip #3 — Keep your data in check!

Phonological awareness is developmental. This means that some students will catch on fast and others will need more support. Make sure that you are meeting your students where THEY are.

Tip #4 — Think About Phonics

Once students have a solid foundation on phoneme manipulation, MAKE THAT MERGE! Merge your phonemic awareness with your phonics lesson. This can be SO powerful for students.

Tip #5 — Make it Multisensory

Don't be afraid to use manipulatives like stickers, play-doh, and counters. Sometimes, kids learn best this way!
