A Closer Look at the Course
Course Overview
Foundations to Fluency was created to provide students with explicit and systematic phonics instruction while ensuring they have a solid foundation in literacy.
Our goal is to help students make the connection between letters and sounds and how these relationships support reading and spelling words.
Creating strong decoders means creating strong readers!
Through research and hands-on teaching, the Foundations to Fluency course and materials are closely aligned with the Science of Reading research.
The curriculum is on the approved list for Science of Reading-aligned resources under the Virginia Literacy Act 2022.
Scope & Sequence
Our Scope and sequence is divided into four main units:
1. Alphabet Knowledge
2. Phonological Awareness
3. Phonemic Awareness
4. Phonics Skills
Irregular or partially irregular words are paired closely to phonics patterns (we provide you with a quick reference guide for mapping those words!)
Lesson Plans
This curriculum includes ready-made lesson plans for each phonics skill as well as blank lesson plans for teacher input.
Lessons follow the gradual release model of the I-Do-We-Do-You Do Process and provides students with multiple opportunities to practice.
Each lesson includes these three crucial components.
A warm-up and cumulative review.
Explicit teaching of the phonics skill with sound-symbol connections.
Guided Practice and Application of Skills
Unit 1
Learning to read begins with a strong foundation in phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge. When provided with systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness in combination with letters and sounds, children’s reading and spelling skills improved.
Module 1 follows Scope and Sequence which introduces 4-5 letters per week, with high utility letters first.
Students must be taught letters and sounds explicitly. Our lessons follow a systematic process:
Identify the letter name
Articulation of the letter (discussion of stop, continuous, voice or unvoiced)
Modeled practice sound
Explicit Practice in letter formation
Application through blending and segmenting known sounds into words
Units 2-4
The NRP has concluded that phonics instruction produces significant benefits for children from kindergarten through 6th grade. The greatest of these improvements were seen through systematic phonics instruction.
Units 2-4 focus on the following phonics skills:
CVC-Digraphs-Blends-R-Controlled-CVCE-Vowel Teams-Diphthongs-Syllable Types-Inflectional Endings.
Assessment & Considerations
Our program is aligned with the Science of Reading and best research practices. We have dedicated an entire module to assessing students and determining both strengths and weaknesses for placement. You will find:
Assessments and Quick Checks
Each unit is accompanied by assessments to help drive instruction. Also included are quick checks that will support teaching, planning, student growth, and instruction.
Research Matters
Our program provides a full list of Science of Reading research and the studies used to help complete the program.
Foundations to Fluency provides evidence-based literacy instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics aligned with science-based reading research. It can be used to supplement or enhance core programs within your school or district.
Foundation skills such as phonemic awareness and decoding are crucial for students to become successful readers.
Phonics instruction should be explicit, systematic, and cumulative
