Why We Love It

Is there anything better than finding an activity that makes reading fun?  Nope, I didn’t think so either!  This alphabet Roll & Review game is sure to be a game you’ll want to laminate and use over and over.  We love it because it’s a FUN and ENGAGING way to review uppercase and lowercase letters and is a wonderful alternative to quizzing kiddos with flashcards (but there’s a time and place for those, too!)  Plus, it’s an activity that can be done independently or with or without partners which makes it great for a literacy center while you’re working with your small groups.

As we always talk about here at Literacy Edventures, cumulative review is key.  It’s always important to go back and review previously-taught skills.  It shouldn’t sometimes be a part of our lesson - it should always hold a place in our lessons.  Roll & Review is a quick and easy way to incorporate review into your lessons because it’s low prep, easy to understand, and only needs a few pieces you already have in your classroom.  Plus, it ensures that students know their letter names and sounds, which lends itself to decoding and encoding.

How to Play

Before beginning, consider slipping Roll & Review into a pocket protector or laminating it.  This way, you’ll be able to use it for future use.  Toss it in a basket with a die and manipulatives (mini erasers, Unifix cubes, or small chips work great) for easy, grab-and-go use!

  1. Two players take their manipulatives and place them on the START circle.

  2. Player 1 goes first and rolls the die.  He or she moves that many spaces and says the sound (and/or the name) of the letter he or she lands on.

  3. Player 2 goes next and follows the same steps.

  4. If a player lands on a special space like “skip next turn”, he or she must obey those rules.

  5. The first player to reach the END circle wins!

Alternative Play: If you’ve played the game a few times, students may also choose to say a word that begins with the letter they’ve landed on.
