Decodable Texts with Comprehension

One common issue I hear when it comes to decodable text is “ Where’s the comprehension?” Well today, my friends, I am bringing the comprehension! Grab your freebie at the bottom of this post!!!

Why We Love Them

There’s nothing like a good decodable, is there?  We love them here at Literacy Edventures, so we decided to give you free, short decodable texts that align with our scope and sequence as practice pages or literary centers!  We love these decodable texts because they're short and sweet, yet effective.  Each one is accompanied by a short follow-up activity, such as retelling the story, comprehension questions, or identifying story elements.

We know you probably have a set of well-used decodables in your classroom, but these easy grab-and-go sheets make for great small group work or take-home activities.  And, as always, since it comes in a variety of phonics patterns, you’re sure to find one that feels “just right” for each one of your students.

How to Use

There are a variety of ways to use this resource - below are just a few of them!

  1. Simply print out whichever decodable you’d like to use for your class.  Remember that you can pass out different ones to each student based upon where they are in their reading journey.

  2. Students will read through the decodable text and then either answer the comprehension questions, complete the retelling of the story, or complete the story elements.

  3. This could also be done in a small group, where the group reads the decodable text together and then completes the activity at the bottom.
