I Spy Phonics Mats
Are you looking for a fun way to reinforce those phonics skills? I’ve got you covered!
Why We Love It
Who doesn’t love the age-old game of I Spy? One of the best aspects of this game is that everyone knows how to play it, so it’s a great independent activity for your literacy centers. But really, the best aspect about this I Spy resource is that it comes aligned to my scope and sequence. Sometimes you get an awesome resource and it only covers a handful of phonics patterns - or maybe even less! The good news about this activity is that no matter where you are on the scope and sequence, you can pull one of these sheets out and find one that’s right for you.
Because of this, it also means that this activity can be differentiated to fit your student needs. Have a student who’s just starting out with CVC words? No problem - grab one of the short vowel sheets. Have another student ready for three-consonant blends? Grab that one! This print-and-go (no really, like you just print it and go) is going to be the perfect addition to any fun phonics lesson
How to Use
Search through the I Spy sheets and print off the ones you want to use with your class. Remember that not all children have to have the same sheet - you can choose which one each student has based upon their abilities.
Students grab their sheet and a pencil or crayons.
Students will read the word next to the box and then find the image in the mix of images below.
Once students find the image, they circle or color in the image. Then, they check off that word.
Students continue to do this with all of the words in their list until all of them are crossed off!
