Boo!

Why We Love It

Sometimes it can feel like there’s not much in the way of games when it comes to fluency. It’s such an important process of the reading journey, but often times it’s hard to practice it in a fun way. But studies show that when playing takes place, so does learning. Therefore, it’s important to drop-in activities that are fun and engaging for students.

BOO! Is a great way to practice building both letter and word or sentence fluency. Students will work on fluency by reading and re-reading students build fluency. What we love about this game is that it has students reading and re-reading sentences (which we know leads to good fluency), but in a fun way that isn’t mundane or feels redundant. This game can be done with partners and as an independent literacy center. If desired, it can also be done independently.

How to Play

Place BOO cards and letter/word/sentence cards inside the Halloween bucket, and allow students to take turns pulling letters/sounds/words/sentences out of the bucket. If they can say the word or sentence, they can keep it. If they can not, they place it back in the bucket. If a student draws a BOO Card, they must put all their cards back into the bucket. The student with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

Phonics Skills included:

Upper and Lower Case Letters

CVCe Sentences
