Fluency Finish Game

Why We Love It

Fluency is such an important aspect of reading.  The more fluent the reader, the better they can understand the meaning behind the text.  Oftentimes we get so caught up in teaching phonics skills that we often forget to practice fluency.  But fluency truly is the bridge that allows students to access the text. With good fluency, students are better able to understand the text that they’re reading because their brain is freed up from sounding out each letter of each word.

That’s why it’s so important to practice fluency at all grade levels.  But sometimes there are a limited number of ways we can practice it.  What we love about this game is that it’s a FUN way to practice fluency!  Rather than reading sentences over and over, we’ve incorporated a little competition and engagement through this game.  Students will not only read these sentences multiple times themselves, but they’ll also hear their peers read them as well.  This is a great aspect of this game because modeling good fluency is another way to encourage others to become better at it!

How to Use

Begin by laminating the game board for future use.  You may also choose to laminate the student sentence pages as well.

  1.  Grab a dice and two manipulatives the players can use.  Decide which phonics skill you’d like to work on.

  2. Students roll the dice and move that many spaces.  They look at what image they landed on, and read the sentence that matches that image.  For example, if a student is on START and rolls a 2, he or she would move to the book.  Then, they would look on the student sentences page and read the sentence.

  3. Play continues and the first person to reach the FINISH wins!
