Decoding Strips
Why do cueing strategies not work?? Let me break it down for you.
OUT WITH THE OLD:
Sharp Shark- "look for sight words" We have already established that whole word reading is a myth!
Eagle Eye- "Look at the picture" When our students rely on picture support first, they become reliant on them and do not use decoding skills. Not all books will have pictures forever!
Lips the fish- Okay, I can get down with this one.. get your lips ready to sound out the words!
Tryin Lion- "Try a word that makes sense." Again- we are teaching them to guess.
The list goes on. I feel like I should be honest here and say that I proudly displayed cueing strategies in my classroom a couple of years ago, BUT when you know better do better!
IN WITH THE NEW
I created these decoding strips as a reminder to students that good readers "attack" words with strong decoding skills! There are three sets.
Set 1: Phoneme level m-a-t
Set 2: Onset rime level m-at (chunk)
Set 3: Syllable level pump-kin
So the next time you sit down with your kiddos at the small group table, pull out these decoding strips and give them a try. You might be surprised at what your kiddos can do!
