How to Use:
What to love about it is in the title – quick! These awesome phonics quick checks are the perfect way to assess a students’ decoding and encoding skills. One of the best aspects about this resources is the way that it’s organized.

• Students have their own sheet to look at while the teacher recording sheet is all on one page so that you can easily assess the students’ data.

• Students will decode words in isolation, sentences, and then in a story.

• Students will then move on to show off their encoding skills with spelling words that pertain to that specific phonics skill.

Here at LE, we never leave you with just one skill to work on – we provide you with all the phonics skills you need so you can always be prepared no matter what grade you teach or what student you’re working with.

• Choose which phonics skill you’d like to assess your student(s) on.

• Print out one DECODING QUICK CHECK Teacher Recording Sheet.

• Print out the student copies of the words, sentences, and text, as well as a spelling words sheet.

• Students will read the words, sentences, and story as you record the number correct and errors on the Teacher Recording Sheet.

• At the end of the sheet, follow the instructions to conclude if the student is at the independent, instructional, or frustration level.

• Students will then move on to the spelling portion of the test. Instructions on how to administer the spelling (encoding) part of the test are provided for you.

Why was this resource created?

❓ I don't know about you, but over the years, I have tried to mix and match phonics activities that will best support my students. Most of the time, the curriculum I am using just does not cover everything that I need it to. The problem is that there are so MANY things out there, that we can easily get overwhelmed with what to use. Phonics instruction should be explicit and systematic (that's what research tells us) but it should also be CONSISTENT.
