Word Detective - Vowel Teams
Did you know that our brains are not actually wired to store words as whole units? Yep, it’s true. It is not a visual process.
Students are often trained to learn this way, which can often cause issues for those of us following the research.
One way to help PROMOTE orthographic mapping and REVERSE guessing is to have students practice with minimal pairs. Minimal pair is just a fancy way of saying: words that look alike (pet/pat)
When we use activities with minimal pairs, we are forcing students to attend to all the sounds in the words they are reading. Not just the beginning or the end.
